Seeing a recent post about someone's items being stolen, reminded me that they were lucky their character wasn't deleted.

There is an old thread about account sharing and character deletion/item stealing, but it mentions plenty of time to stop deletion. For some reason I am unsure of, deletion time has been changed from 24 hours (i think it was 24 hours) down to a mere 30 seconds. I can only think of about 2 reasons such a short deletion time would be useful, but none of them outweigh the benefit of a 24+ hour deletion time.

I'd like to suggest changing deletion times back to 24 hours to reduce such risks. Most equipment can easily be replaced, but character level (which takes a few weeks from 1-75 since 3rd job patch reduced the lower level [tq-cv2] quest/wanteds exp by half and about a week minimum from 76 to 85 if work hard) and moolah title/mounts cannot be replaced so simply. I'd imagine most people wouldn't want to continue playing after a character deletion, but if it's just lost gear that's manageable.

It's not just account sharing that can lead to this. If your account gets hacked (either by guessing, or other means, not like the site is https or anything), there is no special pin verification to delete. Though of course you can change your login PIN on website, you can't change inventory pin, so at least your inventory is fairly safe if using a pin on it that you haven't given to anyone.

Actually, speaking of which, went to verify that and it may have been posted in matty's thread, but the page to update passwords/pins is down? I assume that is temporary from the server move. Any ETA on when that feature will be back up?

Yeah, I know almost every issue with account theft is almost always from sharing accounts. And yeah, the website account has no relation to your game account. I'm pretty sure my forum account isn't the account I used to make Kage, just more convienent to login with. Though Also because there is no relation, logging into your login/pin details is not limited to being on your forum account and your login pin is displayed in plain text there, if anyone happened to guess a username/password.

Anyways, on topic, basically as I said in my replay to Gala, I did not know you had a policy to restore. The only policy I could find that you had, was from before the 30 second deletion was implemented from what I can see, and that was basically that you wouldn't restore characters and not to bother asking for a restore, no one would help you. I am glad to see that policy has changed with the implementation of the deletion time change and that puts my mind at ease. Thanks Sedy and Gala.

Sorry, I didn't realize you guys could/would restore deleted characters. All I saw from the Account Sharing thread when I did a search for information about the deletion time only being 30 seconds was:

"We will NOT be held responsible for deleted characters or missing items and we will not help you recover them. If a character is deleted then it is gone forever. You get plenty of warning and time to cancel a character deletion so it's not something you can do by mistake"

"In fact, if someone else had your account and deleted your character, read above and don't come to me AT ALL."

This put me under the mistaken impression that if a deletion did happen, not to even bother contacting you guys about it and nothing would be done. Thanks for clarifying~ Honestly that puts my mind at more ease about the 30 second deletion. I have actually made use of that once, though, in all honestly, it wouldn't have been a big deal for me to wait out 24 hours, which is what I thought I was going to have to do when I first tried and found out about the deletion time.

I highly doubt there has even been an occasion where somebody has "guessed" a password. 99.99% of so called account thefts have been because the owner has "given" their account details to so called "friends". In just about all cases the true story eventually comes out and we are told something like "oh yeh I did give my my account".

The website has no relation to the actual Iris game accounts. Sure you can go to the control panel and try and guess an account name and password, just as you can with the game client, but none of that information is stored anywhere on this website for security reasons.

Anyway back to the main topic. The deletion time is low for the exact reason Gala mentioned, to clear up a slot for a new character. The actual deleted character remains in our database until we clear them all out, which used to be done every 24 hours to fix issues with voting/donating when you had a deleted character with the same name. However, our scripts were all updated to take that into account so we no longer need to clear out deleted characters so often, maybe once a month. So, if any characters are deleted, intentionally or not, we can recover them for you.

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about, because what we've said in the past is this:

"If your character gets deleted you have 24-48 hours to PM us and we can restore it."

That's why if you delete a character and re-create with the same name you need to PM us to perma-delete it instantly, before it is done in 24-48 hours automatically.

This is for your characters' protection, and we have done it in the past for people, and we keep doing it now if they PM us in time.
What about people with full accounts that simply want to delete one character to create another? Would you suggest that they wait 24 hours to empty the deleted slot and be able to create a new character?

I will again repeat what I've said in the other post. Your account is your responsibility. You wouldn't put a pin that people could guess easily on your online bank account, would you? Because that would lose you money. Why would you put an easily guessable password on your Iris account, inviting people to simply guess it and steal your things.
